Welcome to Orwell Decorative and Fine Arts Society

As a member society of The Arts Society (the operating name of NADFAS), our aim is to promote interest in and knowledge of the Fine Arts. Orwell DFAS is based in the Ipswich area and our members are drawn from all around East Suffolk. The Society takes its name from the River Orwell which flows through Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk, on its way to the sea.

We meet monthly in Tower Hall, Rushmere St Andrew to host an illustrated lecture on a specific Fine Arts related topic. These lectures are both authoritative and entertaining. Lecturers are national and international experts in their fields. Other activities include study days, day-trips to important and notable buildings in the area, an annual tour to an interesting region farther afield, and the opportunity to participate in events and activities promoted by the National Association.

Airedale Solutions have made some changes to our web site (including a Lecture Feedback facility which we will explain later). If it looks rather odd please refresh the web page by clicking on the circular arrow in your browser.

President's Trip - 24th, 25th & 26th September 2019

After one of the best brunches we've had, we moved on to Hampshire and Avington Park with its Palladian facade.  Fascinating history and beautiful parkland with a delicious cream tea in the Orangery.  Day 2 saw us at Wolfeton House and Sandford Orcas Manor House; both situated in Dorset itself.  Wolfeton House lies in water meadows and dates from medieval times with updating in the Elizabethan period.  We received a warm welcome from Capt & Mrs Thimbeley and an excellent sandwich lunch.  Sandford Orcas Manor House dates from Tudor times.  We were shown fine panelling, furniture and pictures by the owner, Sir Mervyn Mediycott Bt.  Our last day was spent at Salisbury Cathedral (a possible revisit in future) and Bowood House in Wiltshire.  Bowood House has Grade 1 listed 'Capability Brown' parkland and beautiful gardens.  It is the home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Landsdowne.  Our base during the trip was spent at the comfortable Shrubbery Hotel in Illminster.  All voted this as a very enjoyable trip.
